Maya Banks is a woman of many faces. Or, rather, genres. She writes erotic romance, Harlequin Desires, romantic suspense, and now historical romance. But one of the great parts about Maya from a reader standpoint is that no matter what genre you’re reading in, she’s got the same great voice. You know you’ll get some action, some suspense, some twists and turns and a huge emotional component.

Nothing new with the McCabe Trilogy. Same great writing, just packed in plaid. And what a fantastic wrapping!

I do love me some Highlanders. And the McCabe brothers are fantastic representations of the male Highland species. The overarching plot of the three books involves the McCabe clan and their need to defeat their enemy, Duncan, who is a constant threat to their weakened defenses. The threat is constant, and provides some real mystery and suspense woven into the courtship of these three men.

Photobucket

All three books were great reads. But I have to say my favorite was Seduction of a Highland Lass (Alaric and Keeley’s story). Mostly because of one specific scene. The handfast. I know last month I said I didn’t cry while reading, and I seriously DO NOT cry. But I’m going to make you think I do because this scene had me tearing up. The absolute intensity of the emotion, from high to low, along with the added action of the scene created this build-up in me, as the reader, that I couldn’t hold back any more.

I also thought it was amusing that poor Rionna couldn’t seem to keep a groom. Every time she had one of the McCabe brothers lined up, one of the guy went and got married to someone else! Not that she loved Ewan or Alaric. And it worked out, because in the end, she was clearly supposed to be with Caelen. But it was an amusing thread through the series…even though it wasn’t necessarily meant to be funny. Just one of those “soft chuckle” moments.

Photobucket

(I swear, saying I cried reading a book is not going to be a habit. But, well, I’m recommending the best of what I’ve read. So naturally this will be the books that had the biggest impact on me. But when you read over 200 books a year, and about 2 make you cry, those are small odds.)

If you’re looking for a good historical series and you want to mix up the regency romances, I suggest these books.

And now, I leave you with this awesome trailer that author Tessa Dare created for Maya Banks based on this series. It’s hilarious.

Check back next month to see which book (or books…or author…) I’ll be recommending next!

Rascal Flatts

Hubs and I were given the fantastic honor of attending the Rascal Flatts concert on Friday night. I say honor because Hubs and his Marines were invited by the band to come as their special guests, and include guests. (Hi, that’s me, the guest!) They simply said that he needed to wear his uniform and the tickets were ours.

Naturally, we said yes!

When we arrived, they put us all together in a dressing room where the guys were able to leave their uniforms. And as a surprise to us, we got to meet the band. It was unbelievable, and the three members were so amazing and nice. Pictures were taken, hands were shaken, then they headed out to get ready for the show.

Photobucket

Then we went to our “seats” which were really standing room sections right up on the stage. We could touch the stage, touch the performers when they leaned down, and see it all. Unbelievable tickets. Sara Evans opened and I love her, so that was an extra treat. (Side note: Look at the shoes she’s wearing in that first picture. Those suckers are killers!)

Photobucket

After a quick break, which was great that we had access to our dressing room (hello, private bathroom and free drinks and a place to sit down!) it was time for Rascal Flatts to take the stage. Great show, awesome music. Class act all around.

Photobucket

But then the closing of the show came, and the Marines were a part of it! How awesome is that? They came out on stage at the very end of the last song and did a little salute and stood at attention. It looked fantastic. I have a few videos up on my Facebook page if you want to go take a peek. In the picture below, Hubs is the guy dead center, without a white belt. Photobucket

We can’t say thank you enough to the guys from Rascal Flatts and the people from the convention center for making our Friday night unbelievable. Night to remember, for sure!

January 2012 Recommended Reading

This is the first monthly installment of my recommended reads. I might be an author, but I’m a reader first and foremost. So, why not spread the love and give my blog visitors my own recommendations for what I’ve read recently that I just couldn’t get enough of?

This month’s recommended read is going to be Pamela Clare’s romantic suspense I-Team series. There are currently five books, though I’m not sure if more are planned. They are, in order, Extreme Exposure, Hard Evidence, Unlawful Contact, Naked Edge and Breaking Point.

I recommend the entire series. And though it’s not at all necessary, reading in order is definitely a treat. This isn’t one of those series where you meet the couple, hear their story, then they’re only vaguely referenced in the other books. The entire I-Team—and their significant other, once they enter the picture—plays a large role in all the other books. It’s honestly just fun to see how each of the men come into the picture and how they become friends through their wives’ connections. Become a single unit.

As I said, they’re romantic suspense. The action is excellently choreographed to the point that the picture is painted perfectly in mind. It’s almost as if, while I’m reading, I’m watching it on a mental screen, it’s that vivid.

To keep this from getting too long, I’ll keep my comments from each book short and to the point. But I could go on about each individually for a long time, if I was given the chance…

Photobucket

First is Extreme Exposure. We’ve got reporter Kara McMillan and Reece Sheridan, the handsome Senator. Political intrigue, learning to trust, great action and fiery passion rolled into one to create a great opening book for the series. This one, the hero Reece was just the icing on the cake. His sweet nature honestly had me melting. Not as “kick ass and take names” physical as the other heroes, but he’s no wimp either. It’s a nice blend.

Photobucket

Next up is Hard Evidence. This one features I-Teamer Tessa (“bless her heart”) Novak and FBI agent Julian Darcangelo. I am so not a person who likes a man with long hair, it’s just not my thing. But there was something about Darkangelo that sucked me in. Enigmatic is the word. He literally takes bullets for his woman…even before he’s ready to admit to himself she’s his. Now that’s a hero.

Photobucket

After that comes Sophie Alton and Marc Hunter (Hunt) in Unlawful Contact. Convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, Marc uses Sophie to escape from prison so he can find his missing sister. I wondered how I could come to like a hero who would take the heroine hostage. It seemed so barbaric, so … Evil Viking. But that’s just the premise. After a few chapters I found myself Marc’s biggest supporter—besides Sophie, naturally! And the ending for this one is extra-sweet. That’s all I’ll say about that.

Photobucket

After that is Naked Edge, featuring Kat James and park ranger Gabe Rossiter. There’s not much I can say about this without spoiling it, but I’ll just say that this book made me cry. I. Do. Not. Cry. Reading. Books. But I did. I cried. Pamela Clare, darn her, made me cry reading this book. That’s all I’ll say there. Just read it. Seriously. Just…go read it. (And now I’m going to tear up just thinking about it. Dang you, Pamela!)

Photobucket

And last, but absolutely not least, Breaking Point, with our sweet southern belle Natalie Benoit and our hardened soldier-turned-US Marshal Zach McBride, still dealing with his past, emotionally atoning day after day for what he thought he should have done differently in the heat of battle. These two meet in captivity, and I liked how the first thing they knew about each other was their voices, thanks to the brick wall between their cells. I won’t say much more, but suffice to say that the action scene in the apartment toward the end of the book was one of the best fight/action scenes I’ve ever read.

So there you have it. The nitty gritty of my take on the I-Team series by Pamela Clare. You can find the books as ebook or paperback. And I hope you come back next month for my next Recommended Reading blog post!

Forever Lazy … from behind

My husband is a seriously awesome sport. Yesterday I showed off my “punishment” as a means of owning up to the bet that I lost. Haven’t seen those pictures yet? Go HERE. Seen enough? Are your retinas still attached?

Good. Because there’s more awesomeness. Now, these were a “Buy One Get One Free” deal at the time. So they just both came in the color I ordered…pink. Hubs naturally was averse to the entire ordeal. I offered to snuggle with him in our matching Lazies, and he rejected me. (I’m holding up a cue card now so you can all say “awww” in mass sympathy.)

But when I received a ton of questions about why I did not take a picture of the back hatch, I realized I’d have to do another photo shoot the next day. At the time, I was just too busy working on my catalog pose and my Ninja Starfish presentation to remember. I was remiss.

But I wasn’t really feeling like showing off my hot bod tonight, so I asked Hubs if he would mind playing Romance’s Next Top Model. Hubs looked at me, sighed, and said … “Hell no.” (Cue card now reads: Laugh) But after some begging, some whining, and promise of cupcakes…he relented.

Reluctance is not even the tip of the iceberg on this one.

But that’s not the point. The point is…HE MODELED THE FOREVER LAZY BACK DOOR! He’s wearing shorts. (Cue card: Dammit.) Sorry ladies. But the fact is…we have a winner. I now present to you…the Forever Lazy Back Door:

Photobucket

Could he LOOK any more pissed about this? Buck up, sonny. Have a cupcake…

It’s not nearly as cute and endearing as I thought it would be. The zipper goes from seam to seam, across the entire back of the garment. And, as you notice, my husband (who is definitely a fit and trim guy…duh. Marine.) somehow manages to look like the Before picture of a Biggest Loser contestant in these things. It’s amazing the amount of girth they pack on you…at least visually.

So there you have it. The front AND the back story on these fantastic garments. Why aren’t you rushing out to buy a dozen for everyone you know?

I could guess…

Forever Lazy

Yes. The Forever Lazy. No idea what I’m talking about? Really? Well hold on a moment. Go here, watch this video, and then come back. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

The Forever Lazy was recently used as a bargaining chip between myself and my husband. First one to break and get fast food would have to put on the Forever Lazy and have their picture taken in it.

I lost. It was a Sonic Route 44 Diet Vanilla Coke, if you’re curious what broke me.

So. With that being said…I ordered the punishment and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, it was here. Actually, it’s been here for awhile, I just didn’t have time to take pictures. But I did tonight. And so, without further delay, here are the pictures of me in the Forever Lazy.

First, we have me just showing off the amazing nature that is this garment. Note the classy way the black zipper contrasts against the hot pink. The way the fit makes me look like a sexy hot air balloon was draped over my lifeless body and left for dead. It’s hot. You want some.

Photobucket

Then we move on to the catalog pose. I had to highlight the hood, because what pair of pajamas would be complete without something to cover your head and smother you to death while you sleep? Hubs thinks that it’s actually to be used for ninja assassin assignments, and honestly, I think he might be right. Much as it pains me to write that sentence… Look at how well I blend in to that door behind me. I could sneak up on a Navy SEAL and they wouldn’t know what hit them. (Okay, at least, they wouldn’t know what hit them. The sneaking part, it might be more like … no.)

Photobucket

And lastly, we have the comparison to a dearly beloved Disney character. Frankly, this thing will save you a ton of cash if you wear it on Halloween and just tell everyone you’re Peach from Finding Nemo. Naturally, you’d have to walk around with your hands in the air. And it would help for authenticity purposes if you could have a friend constantly yell at you, “CAN’T HEAR YOU, PEACH!” Because nothing ruins Halloween like an inauthentic costume.

Photobucket

I leave you with these parting words, dear readers… If you see someone approaching and they are wearing a Forever Lazy…run. Because you never know, they might just be a ninja assassin in disguise. (Or a walking starfish…which is also really creepy.) Quite clever, when you think about it. I mean, look at me. Do you think anyone would believe I had the stealth to break it out ninja-style? Surprise is our friend.

Holiday Cookies – Seven Layers!

This batch of cookies is so easy to make, even I can’t screw it up. I mean, I try, don’t get me wrong. But it’s nearly impossible. So. Here you go!

The layers are: Butter, graham crackers, 1 small can of condensed milk (Eagle Brand is what I use), chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, cocoanut, and nuts of your choice. (Yes. Butter is a layer. These cookies are not for the dieting type.)

Put 1 stick of butter in the pan (9×13, or 9×9 if you want them thicker) and toss it in the oven while it heats up to 350 degrees. Let the stick of butter melt completely. Then crush graham crackers up finely and sprinkle over top of the butter until it’s nice and packed in there. Pour the condensed milk over top of that, then layer on the chocolate and butterscotch. After that’s done, then add the cocoanut and nuts. (I never do nuts, not a fan. But they’re fine with or without!)

Bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes and take out. Let them cool for about five minutes, then cut into squares while it’s still warm. (Easier to cut through the melted chocolate that way. Once they’ve cooled, it’s harder.) Let them cool completely, then pop out of the pan and eat! YUM!

Sound good to you? I thought so. I know it looks weird, but they’re SO GOOD! Want more ideas for holiday cookies? Here are a few of my friends and their suggestions! Do you have a favorite cookie recipe for the holidays?

Annie Nicholas – Shortbread Cookies

CM Torrens – Stained Glass cookies

Keri Ford – Cake Batter cookies

Another year older

Me! That’s right, I turned 28 this past weekend. Sadly my husband had drill or he would have celebrated the event with me. That would make 9 birthdays out of 10 since we’ve been together that he’s missed. Poor guy, he always takes it way harder than I do. I’m not a big birthday person myself. Plus, he’s taking me to a concert I’ve been dying to go to this coming weekend. So all is forgiven. haha

Along with my birthday is always the reminder that Christmas is around the corner! Eep! I’m almost done with gift shopping, now I just have to wrap them all up. That’s the tricky part.

I also managed to finish the first draft of Duty Calls, which is the second book of the Semper Fi series! WHOOP! This one is scheduled for January 2013. Seems forever away, but it’s really not. It needs a lot of cleaning up, all of my first drafts do. But as the undeniable queen of romance, Nora Roberts, once said… You can’t fix a blank page. And I agree.

Now while I let that settle down a little, I’ve got something else I’m working on while I plot out the third book of my Semper Fi series. I always need a few weeks away before I can go back to edit. Gives me the clarity I need to see the book again with fresh eyes. I’m really excited to tell you all about this new project. But you’ll have to wait until the new year. Sorry!

I hope you all get your Christmas shopping done with as little stress as possible, and remember to take a minute to BREATHE! This is our first year playing Santa Claus for our daughter, so we’re extra excited for that new challenge.

And may all your Thanksgivings be…this confusing

Me: I don’t care. You know it doesn’t matter to me what we eat. Hell, if Taco Bell was open, I’d say let’s eat that.

Hubs: I’m sorry, what? Taco Bell? For Thanksgiving?

Me: I’m sorry, how is that any worse than eating frozen pizza, which is the current plan?

Hubs: But at least pizza is American!

Me: *raised brow*

Hubs: Well, you know. More so than tacos.

Me: Right. Because frozen pizza is more American than tacos from Taco Bell. The Bell is really known for the authenticity of their Mexican food.

Hubs: …shut up.

Which is really just his way of saying the Murrays hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!

November Brings…

This month, so many of my writing buddies are “competing” in Nano, which is National Novel Writing Month. A month that encourages anyone who has ever held the desire to write a novel to give it a shot. Huge support, and a place to whine when the pressure gets to you. It’s a fantastic motivation tool.

Sadly, I won’t be competing this year. I’ve got edits to finish up! But that means that Honor Bound is one step closer to hitting shelves, so I can’t complain there. As far as work goes, I’ve got to finish up the first draft of the second book (Duty Calls) in the Semper Fi series. And also look back to book three and start plotting there, as some things have changed.

Fun wise, Hubs and I will be attending Straight No Chaser next weekend! I’m incredibly excited about this. Straight No Chaser is an all-male acapella group that was start at IU and now puts out CDs of their own. I absolutely love their Christmas CD and listen to it even when it’s not the holiday season. This is my first time seeing them live in concert. But my parents went last year and they assured me we’re in for a big treat. I think they’re right!

Are you doing anything fun for November? How about Thanksgiving plans, traveling anywhere fun or special?

Remember, if you want to keep up with more daily Jeanette fun, or hear more to-the-moment hilarity of my life chasing after Tot, keeping track of Hubs, and not killing the dog, follow me on Twitter, I’m @JeanetteMurray, or Like me on Facebook… facebook.com/jeanettemurraybooks.

Have a good month, everyone!
